DO I LOOK LIKE A DADDY TO YOU

Wed 9/2/09

When I'm home off the road mine and Kelly's typical day starts with her waking up at about 5:30am and going through the process of getting ready for work. This means showering washing her hair and putting on make-up.

I normally sleep till about 6:30 or 7:00 then drag myself and Yogi (yes he sleeps with us! either right between us or on my pillow wrapped around my head like a football helmet!) out of bed and stumble blindly into the kitchen and make my first cup of coffee and start my 30 minute minute process of waking up. The timeline on that is usually get coffee made, go sit in the garage and stare at the floor for 5 minutes, while my brain is beginning to realize that my body is awake, then light my first Marlboro (I KNOW ITS A NASTY HABIT SO DON'T START! LOL!) and stare at the floor for another 5 minutes while all the neural connections are made between my brain and body as the brain realizes that not only am I awake but I'm alive too! If you talk to me during this first 10 minutes I'll say absolutely NOTHING that makes sense and will most likely sound as if I was raised in the jungle talking to gorillas and chimpanzees!

During the next 5 minutes I open my computer and start reading the news on the Drudge Report website and my brain actually starts having its' first coherent thought of the day, and after a grand total of 30 minutes I can form complete sentences and pretty much speak the English language almost as well any typical red blooded American (illegal aliens excluded).

By the time 7:30 rolls around I can at the very least say "I Love you have a good day" and manage to pucker my lips without drooling as Kelly comes out to the garage and gets in her car to go leave for work! Sometimes I can actually squeeze in a "Drive safe sweetie," as she's backing out of the garage.

So 2 weeks ago on Wednesday, August 19th she was getting ready in the bathroom while I was still snoozing at about 6am and she woke me from my sleep of the dead with a very loud,

"Daddy! Come LOOK!  Come LOOK DADDY!"

I sat bolt upright in bed and my first thought was,

'Uh-OH! Yogi musta had an accident in the house!", which he does every now and then. The only time she refers to me as "Daddy" is when it's pertaining to Yogi (our Shih-Tzu of about 3 years).

So I jumped up and pulled on my shorts and happened to notice that Yogi was still lying on my pillow asleep.

'What the...?!" I thought as I stumbled toward the bathroom. CLEARLY if he'd had an accident it had happened the night before and neither Kelly nor I had noticed it! That must be it!

As soon as I walked through the door she stuck her hand out and handed me something and said,

     "LOOK!"

I did. I looked down at my hand holding what appeared to be a white plastic stick with a small window in it. I thought at first that it was a digital thermometer. But I looked into the little window and there were no numbers. Just a bright pink line with another faint pink line beside it against a background of white.

I looked up at Kelly in confusion,

"What is it? Are you sick?"

     She giggled!

     "Noooooo...."

"Well what...." I stared back down at the stick again and STILL couldn't make sense of it! WAY too early for me!

"Read what it says..." she said.

WAAAAY too early for reading comprehension! But I adjust my eyes and read the small print beside the little window on the stick.

It looked something like this:

II-Pregnant

I-Not Pregnant

      WHAT????

Back at the window I could see the bright pink vertical line and a faint pink line beside it.

I looked back up at her with my jaw flopping around on my chest,

     "Does this mean..."

     She giggled again,

     "You're gonna be a DADDY!"

"HOLY....are you SERIOUS?!?!?" was all I could say.

     She just giggled some more.

     "That's what it says!"

I was more awake at that moment than I've ever been in my life!! And I've NEVER been THAT HAPPY THAT EARLY in the morning in my entire life either!

After all the months of trying, all the disappointments, the medical procedures for she and I both our dream had finally come true.

     Kelly was  pregnant!

     With OUR Baby!

     We were So happy!

And long after she'd left for work, I stood and stared at the little pregnancy test stick and then at the mirror, wondering if I looked like a Daddy yet!!!!
